Know the signs

These signs are common and usually caused by something else. They are worth checking when they do not go away.

  • BloatingFeeling swollen most days, not just after meals.
  • Pelvic or belly painPain or pressure in your lower belly or pelvis.
  • Feeling full quicklyTrouble eating, or feeling full after only a few bites.
  • Urinary changesNeeding to pee more often or more urgently.

The rule of thumb: if any of these are new for you and last two weeks or longer, or happen more than 12 times a month, make an appointment.

How to talk to your doctor

These symptoms are easy to brush off. A few simple steps help you be heard.

  1. Write down each symptom, when it started, and how many days a week it happens.
  2. Bring your family history checklist.
  3. Say clearly that the symptoms are new for you and have not gone away.
  4. Ask what could be causing them and whether you need a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or blood test.
  5. If nothing is found and symptoms continue, go back or ask for a second opinion.
